Year 11 Homework W/C 23/02/09
Hi all, hope you had a good half term. Homework this week is to open the attached document, read the sources then answer the questions.

Mr Tomlinson’s group – coursework questions
Hope you’re having a nice holiday.
You have a lot of info in your folder that is needed to answer question 3. (You could also do some research of your own if you really wanted to!) The question requires you to make YOUR mind up as to what you think was the most important reason.
There were quite a few reasons for the introduction of the poor law in 1834. Cost was only one of them. Conditions of the workhouses was another, the swing riots another, the inefficiency of The Speenhamland system another – (all of this was explained in the last lesson, I also printed the powerpoint out with the information on as people wanted me to do)
What do YOU think? Do you think it was the fact that cost of paying for the poor was rising? Or was it that people were becoming lazy because of the way the old system was set up and this was inefficient? Or do you think it was because of the swing riots which proved that the old system wasn’t working properly? Also the workhouses that people were able to turn to were too ‘comfortable’, maybe this was an important factor. Try to write a paragraph on each if you can linking each point into the question. Use the little paragraph structure I gave you all in the last lesson.
Don’t worry too much, but definitely have a go at the question. I deliberately haven’t spent as much time with you all on this question as I wanted to see you using your skills to try to answer it. It obviously won’t be graded immediately, and this is a draft for now. We’ll spend some time on it next week.

1. Read chapter 11 in the textbook and prepare for a factual test on the economy for Monday 23rd Feb
2. Answer the two questions using the sources and your own knowledge

Year 12 Homework – Nazi Germany
For Monday, you should all make a list of at least 10 or 12 polciies that the Nazis introduced relating to children.
For each one, you need to describe briefly what it changed and then explain the effect the Nazis were trying to achieve.
On Monday we will assss how successful these Nazi policies were.
Mr Tomlinson’s Group (10H) Florence Nightingale newspaper task
You are a reporter for ‘The Daily News’ newspaper and are reporting from the Crimea.
You should be working on your 2 detailed paragraphs for your main newspaper story. Please feel free to submit your drafts here on the blog and I can help you by making comments.
This task should be completed by next Thursday (4 December). I will hand out the templates in next Wednesday’s lesson (3 December) for you to do in neat.
REMEMBER you also need to include a secondary story which links in with the main story.
Info below:
Create a newspaper front page using the A3 template provided.
You must include:
· A price
· The date
· Other information (use your imagination)
· MOST IMPORTANTLY Two detailed paragraphs (The Crimean War, the poor conditions, the work of a nurse called Florence Nightingale, why and how Florence Nightingale is improving conditions, what significance this could have for medicine in the future…etc)
· A brief secondary news story of two or three sentences about another development in medicine. This story should link in with your main story. Hint: germs (Pasteur/Koch) or antiseptics (Simpson)
Think about this:
· What is Florence Nightingale’s background? Does it have any influence on her decision to become a nurse and go to The Crimean War?
· What is the impact, importance and significance of Florence Nightingale’s work?
· The development of the nursing profession met with opposition – why? How might she overcome this opposition?
· What could Florence Nightingale’s legacy be to future generations?
REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE WRITING AS IF YOU WERE THE REPORTER AT THE TIME….

3. Change/Continuity living timeline.
4. Self Evaluation.
5. Reading for the reading log.
6. Any other outstanding work.
All of this needs to be handed in on Monday – NO EXCUSES
